World Bank to look into need of Padma Bridge & Ganges Barrage

Dhaka-- (UNB) – The World Bank will look into the need and feasibility of some of the major projects being considered by the Bangladesh government such as Eastern Bypass Padma Bridge and Ganges Barrage.

Visiting Managing Director of the World Bank Shengman Zhang gave this assurance in a meeting yesterday (Tuesday) with Finance Minister Shah AMS Kibria at his ERD chamber.

The World Bank top boss, here on a five-day tour at the invitation of Kibria, shared government’s concern about improving efforts for mitigation of arsenic contamination. He said enough resources would be made available for the ongoing arsenic mitigation programme.

Zhang appreciated positive developments in Bangladesh economy, particularly accelerated growth, low inflation and improvement of banking sector, especially reduction in proportion of classified loans, improvement of provisioning and capitalisation.

Zhang is visiting Bangladesh on familiarization tour to see how lending and utilization of credits can be enhanced.

Various matters of cooperation between Bangladesh and the World Bank were discussed in his meeting with the Finance Minister.

Later in a working group meeting, the Finance Minister gave a brief account on macroeconomic situation, economic growth, progress in reform programmes in different sectors and privatisation programmes.

Some top-prioritized government projects, including Eastern bypass scheme, Padma bridge and Ganges barrage, came up for discussion along with appraisal of the ongoing ones.

Bangladesh Bank Governor, ERD Secretary, Finance Secretary, IRD Secretary, Water Resources Secretary, Post and Telecommunications Secretary, Health Secretary and Power Secretary attended the meeting on Bangladesh side.

Frederick T Temple, Country Director of the World Bank, and Chinboon Lee, Country Coordinator for Bangladesh in WB, Washington, took part in discussion on behalf of the World Bank.
